Development of Mid-Infrared Absorption Spectroscopy for Gemstone Analysis

Absorption spectroscopy has been widely used in gemstone societies as it enables the identification of origin and post-treatment gemstones a non-destructive way. The infrared (IR) range is critical for studies such corundum, emerald, diamond. Regarding corundum sample, absorption peaks related to -OH bond could be an index heat-treatment detection, different types inclusions identified by analyzing IR spectrum. most method measuring absorptions Fourier-transform (FTIR), which was designed based on working Michelson interferometer. However, FTIR few limitations, long measurement time difficulty sample placement, limits its full automation capability. In this study, mid-infrared (MIR) spectrometer relying upconversion phenomenon non-linear crystals measure spectra. Corundum with heat treatment features and/or common were measured both transmission reflection modes. After comparison spectra captured same set, target shorter easier operation. developed MIR directly spectrum 2–4.5 µm (2200–5000 cm−1) within seconds. Meanwhile, modes available, loose mounted measured, supporting widespread use device large-scale production ability achieve automation.
